CAC's weekly tech tip for week of November 9, 2009

What type of brake should I use on my unwind? Air brakes are better suited for high speed, high torque applications. They have very high heat dissipation capability. Magnetic particle brakes are extremely well suited for low speed, low torque applications where you need very accurate tension control. Magnetic particle brakes lack in heat dissipation, so they are not well suited for high speed, high torque applications. Their almost straight torque curve is great for applications demanding very accurate tension control. Sometimes driving your unwind stand is the best option. Drive systems can be designed to handle high speed, high torque and highly accurate tension control requirements. Driving your unwind may be the most expensive method of controlling tension off your unwind.

Jessup Manufacturing White Paper Analyzes Decision Factors for Adhesives

Jessup Manufacturing Company, North America's leading manufacturer of non-slip and photoluminescent technology, has developed a white paper to assist OEMs in better understanding engineering decisions when evaluating adhesive systems for specific product needs. "Create a Competitive Product Advantage by Avoiding Adhesive System Stereotypes," analyzes the choices of resin categories and processing methods that may affect the final decision on the most appropriate solution. "Many companies put themselves at a competitive disadvantage by limiting adhesive systems choices based on performance stereotypes rather than considering the many individualized technologies that are available," explained Alan M. Carlson, vice president marketing support and business development for Jessup. "Our experience in custom coating helps us evaluate the best adhesive for a particular application for our customers." The white paper analyzes the many variations in performance that are now possible through the use of additives or special curing processes that can increase the cost/performance ratio for adhesives. It also includes the essential criteria to help in the adhesive selection process. To view the white paper, visit: www.jessupmfg.com About Jessup Jessup Manufacturing Company (www.jessupmfg.com) was established in 1956 and is a global manufacturer and supplier of pressure sensitive films, photoluminescent films and non-slip technology. CEMA and AIMCAL Merge

FORT MILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Members of the Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL), an international, nonprofit trade association representing converters of metallized, coated and laminated flexible substrates and their suppliers, voted 82 to one at the group's recent Winter Management Meeting to merge with the Converting Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA). The merger, which was approved by CEMA members in September 2002, creates an organization with more than 200 member companies and restructures AIMCAL to include a CEMA Division focused on the interests of converting equipment manufacturers. The Division consists of past CEMA members plus any OEM converting equipment manufacturer members of AIMCAL that wish to participate. A single AIMCAL company membership is all that is required to participate in both organizations. The merged organization will be headquartered at AIMCAL's existing offices in Fort Mill, South Carolina, USA. The merger, which is expected to be finalized by April 1, 2003, brings converting equipment manufacturing and users together and pools the resources of two successful associations. Resulting synergies will foster the development of new technology and business relationships and enable the converting industry to speak in one, stronger voice. With the merger, members from both organizations may participate in traditional AIMCAL activities as well as CEMA Division programs. "The integration of CEMA as a division within AIMCAL adds value for members of both groups," says AIMCAL President Frank Sereno of PROMA Technologies, Inc., Franklin, MA. "The merger brings CEMA members closer to their customers and gives AIMCAL members access to highly respected educational offerings, especially in the area of safety, which has been a major focus of CEMA for many years," he explains. CEMA's officers and trustees will continue to lead the CEMA Division and will assume responsibility for planning CEMA activities and initiatives. CEMA's Marketing and Safety Committees remain in place and its highly regarded programs such as the Coating and Laminating and Slitting Conferences will continue. CEMA Division leaders include President Matt Tielkemeier of Dri-Tec, Inc., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Vice President Jeffrey Damour of Converter Accessory Corp., Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, and Secretary/Treasurer Mike DeRosier of Paper Converting Machine Co., Green Bay, Wisconsin as well as Safety Committee Chair Jeff Behnke, Appleton Manufacturing, Neenah, WI, Marketing Committee Chair Dave Rumson of Dienes Corp., Spencer, Massachusetts, and Trustees Jerry Godfrey and Alex Smart of Black Clawson Converting Machinery LLC, Fulton, New York; Cecily J. Archer of ConvertingResource.Com, Pen Argyl, Pennslvania; Leo Nadolske of Paperloop, New York, New York; Ron Schmidt of Maxcess International, Oklahoma City, OK and John Campbell of Nexen Group, Inc., Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. Steps to the Merger Informal meetings between the two groups planted seeds for the merger in 1999, which sprouted early in 2002 at a strategic planning meeting where CEMA officers and trustees concluded a merger would be positive for both organizations and presented the idea to AIMCAL. After a positive reception at CEMA's annual meeting in June 2002, each association formed a subcommittee of board members to define how a merged organization would operate. The resulting Agreement and Plan of Merger and Memorandum of Understanding about the structure of the new organization were approved in August 2002 by the Boards of both organizations. The CEMA Organization CEMA grew out of a 1984 meeting among nine charter companies to discuss the need for an organization to pursue the collective interests of OEMs serving the converting industry. Founded later that year, its "mission is to promote, advance and represent the interests of converting manufacturers in the industry and markets served." CEMA's goals are to advance the use of converting equipment, provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas, lobby on behalf of the industry concerning legislation and regulations that may impact the industry, offer educational opportunities for the membership and the industry, establish and maintain liaison between organizations with similar interests. One of CEMA's strengths is its technical programs including a two-day coating/laminating session during the CMM International Slitting Conference and a two-day slitting seminar. An active Safety Committee has helped member companies gain expertise in product liability and good safety practices. The AIMCAL Organization AIMCAL was formed in 1970 when the Vacuum Metallizers Association decided to broaden its membership to include coaters, laminators and suppliers. It quickly established a committee structure to focus on different areas of interest including Window Film, Regulatory, Coating & Laminating, Vacuum Coating (formerly Metallizing), Economics and Membership. Over the years, a widely respected awards program has evolved. It includes two annual competitions, Product of the Year and Technology of the Year. Also well regarded in the industry are AIMCAL's educational programs such as the Fall Technical Conference and AIMCAL Summer School. Publications include Metallizing Technical Reference, the AIMCAL SourceBook (a directory of member capabilities), meeting proceedings and the three-time-a-year AIMCAL News newsletter. It also maintains an industry Website, www.aimcal.org. AIMCAL has nearly doubled in size during the past five years. Leadership includes four officers, six directors-at-large and Executive Director Craig Sheppard. Officers serving with Sereno include Vice President Paolo Raugei of Galileo Vacuum Systems, East Granby, Connecticut; Treasurer Bill Yoder of Lamart Corp., Clifton, New Jersey; and Past President David Fletcher of Bekaert Specialty Films LLC, San Diego, California. Serving as directors are Roger Phillips of Flex Products Inc., Santa Rosa, California; Chip Dunne of UCB Surface Specialties, Itasca, Illinois; Liz Josephson of Applied Films Corp., Longmont, Colorado; Mike Morris of Advanced Ceramics Corp., Lakewood, Ohio; Michael Engel of FLEXcon North America, Spencer, Massachusetts; and Mark Montsinger of Bryce Corporation, Nashville, Tennesse.

PMMI Publishes Revised Safety Standard

The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute, Arlington, Virginia, has published the newly revised ANSI/PMMI B155.1-2006 ? Safety Requirements for Packaging Machinery and Packaging-Related Converting Machinery. This revised version, approved as an American National Standard, is harmonized with the international (ISO) and European (EN) standards by the introduction of hazard identification and risk assessment as the principal method for analyzing hazards to personnel and achieving acceptable risk. The requirements of this standard apply to new, modified or rebuilt industrial and commercial machinery that performs packaging functions for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging. The standard describes procedures for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and reducing risks to an acceptable level over the life cycle of the packaging machinery. "Both suppliers and users of packaging machinery have responsibilities for defining and achieving acceptable risk for operating specific equipment," states Fred Hayes, director of technical services, PMMI. "Although the responsibilities of the supplier and the user differ over the life cycle of the packaging machinery, under the revised standard, each uses the same risk assessment process. The supplier and the user, either separately or jointly identify hazards, then assess and reduce risks to an acceptable level within the scope of their respective work activities." This edition of the standard integrates the requirements of ISO 12100 parts 1 and 2, and ISO 14121, as well as U.S. standards. Suppliers meeting the requirements of ANSI/PMMI B155.1-2006 should conform to the requirements of these three ISO standards. This will facilitate meeting the requirements for CE certification. "The driver for harmonizing the international (ISO), European and ANSI/PMMI standards is to achieve a 'one standard, one conformity assessment, ship anywhere' status for manufacturers," adds Hayes. "The revised B155.1 standard gives real world guidance on how to conduct the recommended risk assessment, ultimately helping manufacturers build safer and more productive machinery that can be shipped all over the world." For the past 34 years, PMMI has been recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an accredited "standards developing organization." PMMI's standards development procedures have been approved by ANSI as meeting its "essential requirements" of due process and balance. The first version of the PMMI B155.1 standard was approved as an American National Standard Institute in 1973. The 2006 edition, also the fifth revision approved by the ANSI Board of Standards Review, underwent the most substantial changes since its inception. The final version includes the comments from 28 industry professionals from the entire packaging machinery supply chain. "We were extremely pleased with the incredible level of industry discussion that took place for this year's revision," notes Hayes. "The result of this record-setting industry effort is a voluntary safety standard that supports the truly global packaging machinery industry." The B155.1 standards committee included representatives from machinery builders, safety experts, and users of packaging machinery. Organizations participating on the standards committee included: Raque Food Systems, MGS Machine Corp., Krones, Packaging Technologies, FKI Logistex, Luciano Packaging Technologies, Rockwell Automation, Chubb Insurance, Keller and Heckman LLC, Design Safety Engineering, Association for Manufacturing Technology, Institute of Packaging Professionals, Robotic Industries Association, National Fluid Power Association, Kraft Foods, Kellogg Co., Johnson & Johnson, Pactiv Corp., Procter & Gamble, and Sara Lee. The new ANSI/PMMI B155.1-2006 safety standard for packaging and packaging-related converting machinery is available for $65 on www.pmmi.org (under Shop PMMI) or by contacting Fred Hayes at fhayes@pmmi.org or 1-888-ASK-PMMI (275-7664).
